Selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors
Topic: Pharmacology
A class of antidepressants that blocks serotonin reuptake at the synapse (e.g., sertraline, fluoxetine, escitalopram); widely used for depression and anxiety disorders. The full effect takes several weeks. Monitor closely early in treatment, especially in young people, as suicidal thinking can increase. Combining them with other serotonergic drugs risks serotonin syndrome, and they should not be stopped abruptly.
- Also known as:
- SSRIs, SSRI
- In Turkish:
- Seçici serotonin geri alım inhibitörleri
