Therapeutic index

Topic: Pharmacology

The ratio between the toxic dose and the effective dose of a drug. With a narrow therapeutic index (e.g., digoxin, lithium, warfarin, aminoglycosides) effective and toxic levels lie close together, so monitor blood levels and signs of toxicity and watch for drug interactions.
