Statins
Topic: Pharmacology
A drug class that inhibits HMG-CoA reductase, reducing cholesterol synthesis in the liver and lowering LDL cholesterol (e.g., atorvastatin, rosuvastatin); they reduce cardiovascular risk in coronary artery disease, stroke and diabetes. The key adverse effects are myopathy and, rarely, rhabdomyolysis; liver enzymes can rise. They are not used in pregnancy. Teach the client to report unexplained muscle pain, weakness or dark urine at once, that some statins interact with grapefruit juice, and that diet and exercise remain part of treatment.
