Thiazide diuretics
Topic: Pharmacology
A class of moderate-strength diuretics that block sodium and chloride reabsorption in the distal tubule (e.g., hydrochlorothiazide, indapamide); a common first-line treatment for hypertension. They can cause hypokalemia, hyponatremia, hypercalcemia, hyperglycemia and raised uric acid (gout attacks), and they work less well when kidney function is very low. Monitor blood pressure, electrolytes, blood glucose and daily weight; teach the client to take the drug in the morning to avoid nocturia and to report signs of hypokalemia.
