Sulfonylureas
Topic: Pharmacology
Oral drugs for type 2 diabetes that make pancreatic beta cells release insulin regardless of the blood glucose level (e.g., glipizide, glimepiride, gliclazide). Hypoglycemia is the main risk, especially in older adults, in kidney impairment and when meals are skipped or delayed, and it can be prolonged. Weight gain is common. Teach the client to take the drug with or just before a meal, never to skip meals, to recognize and treat hypoglycemia, and to check blood glucose as advised; beta blockers can mask the warning signs.
