SGLT2 inhibitors
Topic: Pharmacology
Oral drugs that make the kidneys excrete glucose and sodium in the urine (e.g., empagliflozin, dapagliflozin); besides lowering glucose in type 2 diabetes, they protect the heart and kidneys and are also used in heart failure and chronic kidney disease. Genital fungal infections, urinary tract infections, volume depletion and hypotension can occur. They can cause ketoacidosis with near-normal glucose (euglycemic DKA), especially during acute illness, fasting or surgery. Teach genital hygiene and adequate fluid intake, and hold the drug as ordered during acute illness and before surgery.
