Cardiac glycosides

Topic: Pharmacology

A drug class that strengthens myocardial contraction and slows the heart rate; the main example is digoxin, used in heart failure and atrial fibrillation. Its therapeutic range is narrow. Count the apical pulse for a full minute first and, in adults, usually hold the drug and consult if the rate is below 60/min. Hypokalemia increases toxicity; nausea, anorexia, yellow-green halos and new arrhythmias signal toxicity.

Also known as:
Digoxin, Digitalis glycosides
