Cephalosporins
Topic: Pharmacology
Beta-lactam antibiotics grouped into generations, with later generations more active against gram-negative bacteria (e.g., first-generation cefazolin, third-generation ceftriaxone). Cefazolin is widely used for surgical prophylaxis, given within the hour before incision. Cross-reactivity with penicillins is low, but consult the provider after a severe penicillin reaction. Diarrhea and Clostridioides difficile infection can occur. Never mix or co-infuse ceftriaxone with calcium-containing IV solutions, and avoid it in newborns who need them. Take an allergy history and monitor for anaphylaxis.
