Atrial fibrillation
Topic: Medical-surgical
One of the most common arrhythmias: chaotic, rapid electrical activity in the atria replaces effective atrial contraction. The pulse is irregularly irregular, and palpitations, fatigue and dyspnea may occur. Blood pooling in the atria can clot and cause a stroke, so many clients need anticoagulation. Count the apical pulse for a full minute, monitor the rhythm, and watch for bleeding and signs of stroke.
