Stroke
Topic: Medical-surgical
A sudden disruption of blood flow to the brain from a blocked vessel (ischemic stroke) or bleeding (hemorrhagic stroke). Warning signs include facial droop, arm weakness, speech difficulty, sudden vision loss and loss of balance (BE-FAST). Treatment windows are counted from when the client was last known well, so record when symptoms began or, if that is unknown, when the client was last known to be well. Give nothing by mouth until a swallow screen is done, and prevent aspiration and falls.
