Chemotherapy

Topic: Medical-surgical

Cancer treatment with drugs that target rapidly dividing cells. Because it also affects normal cells of the bone marrow, the lining of the mouth and gut, and hair follicles, it causes low blood counts, mucositis, nausea and vomiting, and hair loss; the point when blood counts are lowest is the nadir. As hazardous drugs, they are prepared by trained staff; nurses wear chemotherapy-tested gloves and gowns and watch for extravasation of vesicants.
