Carbon monoxide poisoning
Topic: Medical-surgical
Poisoning from breathing carbon monoxide, an odorless, colorless gas often produced by faulty stoves, water heaters and boilers, a common winter emergency in Türkiye. It binds hemoglobin far more tightly than oxygen, and standard pulse oximeters read carboxyhemoglobin as oxyhemoglobin, so SpO2 can look falsely normal. Headache, dizziness, nausea and confusion may affect several people in one home. Remove the person from the source, give high-flow oxygen and measure carboxyhemoglobin.
