Atrioventricular block

Topic: Medical-surgical

Delayed or interrupted conduction of sinus impulses from the atria to the ventricles. In first-degree block the PR interval exceeds 0.20 s and every P wave is conducted; in second-degree block some P waves are not followed by a QRS (type I: the PR lengthens progressively; type II: the PR is constant and beats drop suddenly); in third-degree (complete) block the atria and ventricles beat independently. Type II and complete block can cause bradycardia, hypotension and syncope: monitor rhythm and perfusion, review drugs such as beta blockers and digoxin, and prepare for pacing as ordered.

Also known as:
AV block, Heart block, Complete heart block
