Chronic kidney disease

Topic: Medical-surgical

Kidney damage or loss of function lasting more than 3 months, defined by a GFR below 60 mL/min/1.73 m² or markers of damage such as albumin in the urine. Diabetes and hypertension are the leading causes. As it progresses, wastes, fluid, potassium and phosphate build up, and anemia, metabolic acidosis, hypertension and bone disease follow; stage 5 (kidney failure) needs dialysis or a transplant. Monitor weight, blood pressure, intake and output and electrolytes, avoid nephrotoxic drugs, and protect the arm veins for future dialysis access.
