Mood stabilizers

Topic: Pharmacology

Drugs that prevent manic and depressive episodes in bipolar disorder: lithium and antiepileptics such as valproate, carbamazepine and lamotrigine. Lithium has a narrow therapeutic range, so blood levels and renal and thyroid function are monitored. Dehydration and low salt intake raise lithium levels; nausea, diarrhea, coarse tremor, ataxia and confusion signal toxicity. Valproate and carbamazepine are teratogenic.
