Nitrates
Topic: Pharmacology
A drug class that dilates veins and coronary arteries, reducing preload and myocardial oxygen demand (e.g., nitroglycerin, isosorbide mononitrate); used to treat and prevent angina. Headache, flushing, dizziness and hypotension are common. Taken with phosphodiesterase-5 inhibitors (e.g., sildenafil) they cause severe hypotension, so ask about these drugs. Have the client sit before taking sublingual nitroglycerin, and teach them to call emergency services if pain persists 5 minutes after the first dose. Patches and long-acting forms need a nitrate-free interval to prevent tolerance.
- Also known as:
- Nitroglycerin, Organic nitrates
