Penicillins
Topic: Pharmacology
Beta-lactam antibiotics that block bacterial cell wall synthesis (e.g., amoxicillin, ampicillin, piperacillin-tazobactam), used against many gram-positive and some gram-negative infections. Allergic reactions range from rash to anaphylaxis and are more likely after a previous penicillin reaction. Ask about allergies before the first dose, observe the client for anaphylaxis after it, and keep emergency treatment at hand. Diarrhea and Clostridioides difficile infection can occur; teach the client to complete the full course.
