Opioid analgesics
Topic: Pharmacology
Drugs that bind opioid receptors in the central nervous system to relieve moderate to severe pain (e.g., morphine, fentanyl, oxycodone). The most dangerous effect is respiratory depression, which is usually preceded by increasing sedation, so assess sedation level along with respiratory rate. Constipation, nausea and itching are common. Naloxone reverses them; keep monitoring, because it can wear off before the opioid does.
