Opioid antagonists
Topic: Pharmacology
Drugs that displace opioids from their receptors and reverse their effects; naloxone, given IV, IM, subcutaneously or intranasally, reverses opioid-induced respiratory depression within minutes. Its effect can wear off before a long-acting opioid's, so respiratory depression can return: keep monitoring respiratory rate, oxygen saturation and sedation level after it is given. In clients who take opioids regularly, rapid reversal can cause acute withdrawal and severe pain, so titrate as ordered. Keep naloxone available wherever opioids are given.
