Inhaled corticosteroids

Topic: Pharmacology

Corticosteroids taken by inhalation to reduce airway inflammation (e.g., budesonide, fluticasone, beclomethasone); they are controller medicines in asthma and in some clients with COPD, and do not relieve an acute attack. GINA recommends that treatment for adults and adolescents with asthma contain an inhaled corticosteroid. Oral thrush and hoarseness are the most common adverse effects. Teach regular use, correct inhaler technique and a spacer when needed, and have the client rinse the mouth and spit after each use.
