Cardiac conduction system

Topic: Anatomy & physiology

Specialized cardiac muscle cells that start and coordinate each heartbeat: the sinoatrial (SA) node, atrioventricular (AV) node, bundle of His, right and left bundle branches and Purkinje fibers. The SA node, the natural pacemaker, fires 60–100 times a minute. If it fails, the AV node (40–60/min) and the ventricles (20–40/min) take over with slower escape rhythms. This pathway underlies the ECG waveform.

Also known as:
Conduction system, Sinoatrial node, SA node
