Angina pectoris

Topic: Medical-surgical

Chest pain or pressure from temporary myocardial ischemia, when narrowed coronary arteries cannot meet the heart's oxygen demand. Stable angina comes on predictably with exertion or emotional stress, lasts a few minutes, and is relieved by rest or nitroglycerin. Pain that is new, occurs at rest or is getting worse is unstable angina, an acute coronary syndrome. During an episode, have the client stop and rest, assess the pain and vital signs, obtain a 12-lead ECG, and give nitroglycerin as ordered.
