Myocardial infarction
Topic: Medical-surgical
Death of heart muscle from ischemia when a coronary artery is blocked. The classic symptom is chest pain or heaviness that does not ease with rest and spreads to the arm, jaw or back; women, older adults and people with diabetes often present atypically with dyspnea, nausea or fatigue. Diagnosis rests on the ECG and troponin. Obtain a 12-lead ECG within minutes of arrival and monitor pain and rhythm: time is muscle.
