Antidiuretic hormone
Topic: Anatomy & physiology
A hormone made in the hypothalamus and released from the posterior pituitary that increases water reabsorption in the collecting ducts of the kidney. It is secreted when plasma osmolality rises, concentrating the urine. Deficiency (diabetes insipidus) causes large volumes of dilute urine; inappropriate excess (SIADH) causes water retention and hyponatremia. Monitor intake and output, weight and sodium in these clients.
