Autonomic nervous system

Topic: Anatomy & physiology

The part of the nervous system that controls internal organs, blood vessels and glands involuntarily. The sympathetic division drives the "fight or flight" response, raising heart rate and blood pressure, dilating bronchi and pupils and slowing digestion; the parasympathetic division drives "rest and digest", slowing the heart and stimulating digestion and elimination. Many drugs, such as beta blockers and anticholinergics, act through this system.
