Basic tissue types
Topic: Anatomy & physiology
A tissue is a group of cells with a similar structure that work together as a unit, with the intercellular matrix between them; histology is the study of tissues. The body has four basic tissues: epithelial tissue, which covers surfaces and lines cavities; connective tissue, which binds and supports structures; muscle tissue, which contracts to produce movement; and nervous tissue, which conducts impulses. Organs are built from combinations of these tissues.
