Body membranes
Topic: Anatomy & physiology
Thin layers of tissue that cover the body, line its cavities and wrap the organs inside them. Mucous membranes line cavities open to the outside (the digestive, respiratory, excretory and reproductive tracts); serous membranes, such as the pleura around the lungs, line the closed thoracic and abdominopelvic cavities, cover their organs and secrete a thin fluid that reduces friction. Synovial membranes, made of connective tissue only, line freely movable joints and secrete lubricating synovial fluid; the meninges protect the brain and spinal cord.
