Arterial blood gas

Topic: Anatomy & physiology

Measurement of pH, PaCO₂, PaO₂, bicarbonate (HCO₃⁻) and oxygen saturation in arterial blood. Approximate adult normal values: pH 7.35–7.45; PaCO₂ 35–45 mmHg; HCO₃⁻ 22–26 mEq/L; PaO₂ 80–100 mmHg. Interpret in order: look at the pH, decide whether the respiratory (PaCO₂) or metabolic (HCO₃⁻) component matches it, then assess compensation. A modified Allen test is commonly done before a radial sample.
