Acid-base balance
Topic: Anatomy & physiology
Keeping blood pH within a narrow range (7.35–7.45). Bicarbonate buffers acid, the lungs adjust carbon dioxide by changing ventilation, and the kidneys excrete H⁺ and reabsorb bicarbonate. A pH below 7.35 is acidosis and above 7.45 alkalosis; each is classed as respiratory or metabolic by its origin, and the other system tries to compensate.
