Anterior pituitary

Topic: Anatomy & physiology

The front lobe of the pituitary gland. Under the control of releasing and inhibiting hormones from the hypothalamus, it secretes growth hormone, thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH), adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH), follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH), luteinizing hormone (LH) and prolactin. Hormones from the target glands suppress its secretion by negative feedback. A functioning tumor can make too much of one of these hormones.

Also known as:
Adenohypophysis
In Turkish:
Adenohipofiz
