Benzodiazepines
Topic: Pharmacology
A drug class that enhances GABA to produce anxiolytic, sedative, muscle-relaxant and anticonvulsant effects (e.g., lorazepam, diazepam, midazolam); used for anxiety, seizures and alcohol withdrawal. With opioids or alcohol they raise the risk of respiratory depression, and in older adults they can cause falls and confusion. Flumazenil is the reversal agent but can trigger seizures in long-term users. Dependence can develop, so long-term use is tapered.
