Antiplatelet agents

Topic: Pharmacology

A drug class that prevents arterial clots by stopping platelets from clumping: aspirin and P2Y12 inhibitors (e.g., clopidogrel, ticagrelor). They are used in acute coronary syndrome, after coronary stenting, and in ischemic stroke and peripheral artery disease. The main risk is bleeding, especially gastrointestinal bleeding. Stopping dual antiplatelet therapy after a stent without cardiology approval can cause stent thrombosis. Monitor for bleeding, check before surgery whether the drug was held as ordered, and teach adherence.

Also known as:
Antiplatelets, Platelet aggregation inhibitors, P2Y12 inhibitors
