Antipsychotics
Topic: Pharmacology
Drugs that reduce psychotic symptoms mainly by blocking dopamine receptors; divided into typical (first-generation, e.g., haloperidol) and atypical (second-generation, e.g., risperidone, olanzapine, clozapine). Typicals carry more extrapyramidal symptoms and tardive dyskinesia, atypicals more weight gain and metabolic syndrome. Neuroleptic malignant syndrome is an emergency, and clozapine needs blood count monitoring for agranulocytosis.
