Aminoglycosides

Topic: Pharmacology

Antibiotics that block bacterial protein synthesis, used mainly for serious gram-negative infections (e.g., gentamicin, amikacin, tobramycin); they are poorly absorbed orally, so they are given IV or IM. Nephrotoxicity and ototoxicity, which can be permanent (hearing loss, tinnitus, vertigo), are the main risks, and they can cause neuromuscular blockade. Their therapeutic range is narrow, so peak and trough levels are monitored. Monitor creatinine, urine output and hearing, draw levels at the ordered times, and use caution with other nephrotoxic drugs.
