Peritoneal dialysis

Topic: Medical-surgical

Dialysis that uses the client's own peritoneum as the filter: dialysate is instilled into the abdomen through a catheter, left to dwell, then drained with the wastes and excess fluid. It can be done at home, by hand or overnight by machine. Peritonitis is the main complication, so teach strict hand hygiene and aseptic connections, and have cloudy effluent, abdominal pain or fever reported at once. Warm the dialysate as instructed (never microwave an unwrapped bag); record inflow and outflow amounts and the effluent's appearance, and check the catheter exit site.

Also known as:
CAPD, Continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis
