Pleural effusion

Topic: Medical-surgical

An abnormal collection of fluid between the visceral and parietal pleura. It builds up when fluid enters the pleural space faster than it can be reabsorbed, as in heart, kidney or liver failure, or with pneumonia or cancer. Dyspnea, cough and sharp chest pain that worsens with deep breaths are typical. For thoracentesis, help the client into the ordered position, usually sitting on the edge of the bed; afterward, monitor breathing, vital signs and the puncture site, and report signs of pneumothorax.
