Pneumonia
Topic: Medical-surgical
Infection of the lung parenchyma, most often by bacteria or viruses. Fever, cough, sputum, pleuritic chest pain, tachypnea and crackles are typical; in older adults confusion may be the first sign. Monitor oxygenation, collect cultures before the first antibiotic dose, and encourage deep breathing, coughing and early mobility. Aspiration precautions and vaccination help prevent it.
