Radiation therapy
Topic: Medical-surgical
Treatment that damages the DNA of cancer cells with high-energy radiation. With external beam radiotherapy the patient is not radioactive; with a temporary internal implant (brachytherapy) and some systemic radioactive treatments the patient emits radiation for a time, and time, distance and shielding apply. Side effects depend on the treated area; wash the skin gently with lukewarm water and mild soap, keep the markings and protect the area from sun.
