Hemodialysis
Topic: Medical-surgical
Removal of wastes and excess fluid by pumping blood through an external dialyzer, usually three times a week, through an arteriovenous fistula, graft or central dialysis catheter. Check a fistula or graft for a palpable thrill and an audible bruit, and never take blood pressure, start an IV or draw blood in that arm. Weigh the client before and after each session. Watch for hypotension, muscle cramps, and bleeding or other problems at the access site.
