Multiple sclerosis

Topic: Medical-surgical

A chronic immune-mediated disease in which the central nervous system's myelin is damaged, slowing or blocking nerve conduction; it usually begins in young adults, more often women, and most often follows a relapsing-remitting course. Symptoms depend on the lesions: vision loss or double vision, numbness, weakness, spasticity, fatigue, balance problems, and bladder and bowel dysfunction. Heat, infection and stress can worsen symptoms. Help the client conserve energy, prevent falls, keep cool, manage bladder function and spasticity, and support adherence to treatment.
