Parkinson's disease
Topic: Medical-surgical
A progressive neurodegenerative disease in which dopamine-producing neurons of the substantia nigra are lost. Its cardinal signs are resting tremor (often pill-rolling), rigidity, bradykinesia and postural instability, with a shuffling gait, masked face, soft voice, constipation and orthostatic hypotension; depression and dementia may follow. Give levodopa and other antiparkinson drugs exactly on time, because a late dose can cause sudden immobility. Prevent falls, assess swallowing to prevent aspiration, and encourage physical activity and safe self-care.
