Clinical decision support system

Topic: Management

Software linked to the EHR that gives prompts and alerts according to protocol, offers checklists and screens people by risk: for example, drug allergy or interaction alerts, the error message when a barcode scan shows the wrong client or medication, and forms that calculate a risk score and prompt action. An alert does not replace clinical judgment: never dismiss it as a technology problem; stop, investigate and, if needed, consult the provider or pharmacist.
