An occupational phenomenon, defined in WHO's ICD-11, that results from chronic workplace stress that has not been managed: energy depletion or exhaustion, mental distance from or cynicism about the job, and reduced professional efficacy. In nurses, heavy workloads, short staffing and moral distress raise the risk. Adequate rest, peer support, a healthy work environment and organizational measures help prevent it.
