Herd immunity

Topic: Community health

When a large enough share of a population is immune, through vaccination or prior infection, spread slows and people who are not immune are indirectly protected. The threshold depends on how contagious the disease is; highly contagious diseases such as measles need about 95% vaccination coverage. Infants too young to be vaccinated and immunocompromised people benefit from this protection.
