Ethnocentrism
Topic: Community health
The tendency to judge other cultures by the standards of one's own and to see one's own culture as superior. Cultural relativism, by contrast, seeks to understand a practice within its own cultural context. Ethnocentrism can lead to stereotyping, poor communication and poorer care. Notice your own assumptions, and include the client's cultural practices in the care plan as far as they are safe.
