Renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system

Topic: Anatomy & physiology

A hormone system that regulates blood pressure and fluid volume. When kidney perfusion falls, renin is released; angiotensinogen becomes angiotensin I and then, through ACE, angiotensin II. Angiotensin II constricts blood vessels and stimulates aldosterone, which retains sodium and water and increases potassium excretion. ACE inhibitors and angiotensin receptor blockers target this system.
