Schizophrenia

A chronic psychotic disorder that impairs reality testing. It involves positive symptoms (hallucinations, delusions, disorganized speech and behavior), negative symptoms (blunted affect, avolition, social withdrawal, alogia) and cognitive impairment. Antipsychotics are the mainstay of treatment. Monitor adherence and side effects, gently present reality, and support daily living skills and family education.
