Supraventricular tachycardia

Topic: Medical-surgical

The general term for tachycardias that start above the ventricles; it usually means paroxysmal SVT: a narrow-QRS tachycardia, often faster than 160 beats/min, that starts and stops suddenly. Palpitations, dizziness, dyspnea and chest discomfort are common; a very fast rate can cause hypotension. In a stable client, try vagal maneuvers first, then adenosine as ordered as a rapid IV bolus as close to the client as possible, followed at once by a rapid saline flush, on a cardiac monitor; an unstable client needs synchronized cardioversion.

Also known as:
SVT, Paroxysmal supraventricular tachycardia, PSVT
