Defibrillation

Topic: Medical-surgical

Delivering an electric shock to the heart to stop a chaotic rhythm so that a normal rhythm can return. It is used only for shockable rhythms, ventricular fibrillation and pulseless ventricular tachycardia, not for asystole or pulseless electrical activity. An automated external defibrillator (AED) analyzes the rhythm itself. Make sure no one is touching the patient just before the shock, and resume chest compressions at once afterwards.
