Epilepsy

Topic: Medical-surgical

A brain disorder with a lasting tendency to unprovoked seizures: sudden bursts of abnormal electrical activity that change movement, sensation, awareness or behavior. A seizure lasting 5 minutes or more, or repeated seizures without recovery in between, is status epilepticus, an emergency. During a seizure, stay with the client, note the time and features, ease them to the floor or onto their side, protect the head, loosen tight clothing and never put anything in the mouth. Afterward, keep the airway clear, check orientation and injuries, and give antiseizure drugs on schedule.
